Everything you need to know about idCAT
idCAT Rehberi

One of the biggest challenges you will face when you move to Barcelona will be official transactions. Especially in the post-pandemic digitalized system, idCAT or Clave certificate is required for many transactions. This digital certificate is a system initiated by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 2002 and continuously improved. From social security documents to criminal records, from tax payments to health appointments, you can perform many transactions with this certificate.

It is important not to confuse Clave with idCAT because they are two different things. idCAT is used to access local digital services in Catalonia, while Clave is an authentication system used to access national public services throughout Spain. In this article, I will try to explain idCAT and idCAT Mobile acquisition process based on my own experience. We will prepare another article for Clave.

What is idCAT Certificate and Why is it Necessary?

The idCAT certificate, provided by the Open Government Consortium of Catalonia (AOC), is a tool you can think of as your identity in the digital world. Thanks to this certificate, you can carry out many official transactions online without the need to physically visit a government office.

If you plan to stay in Barcelona for a long time, I highly recommend getting this certificate.

– Access your information in the social security system.
– You can make online appointments in the health system.
– Make your tax payments.
– Sign official documents digitally.
– You can access municipal services online.

Required Documents for idCAT Certificate

Here are the basic documents you need to apply for a certificate:

– NIE or DNI (Foreigner Identification Number or Spanish Identity Card)
– Health Card (TSI) or MUFACE number.
– A cell phone that you actively use.
– An email address that you check regularly.
– Your passport if you do not have a photo ID.

Pre-Application

Before starting the application process, I recommend you to follow these steps:

– Check the list of registration entities.
– Identify the office closest to you.
– Find out the opening hours of the office you have chosen.
– Confirm whether an appointment is required.
– Check the validity of your documents.

How to get idCAT?

There are two different application methods for the IdCAT certificate. Based on my own experience, I recommend the online application because the process is faster.

4. Set your security question.
5. Choose your nearest registration office.

Things to Consider

– Keep your download code and PIN in a safe place.
– Remember to back up your certificate on multiple devices.
– Note the validity period of your certificate.
– Avoid suspicious transactions.

Common Problems and Solutions

I have been using this certificate for a year now and I would like to share with you the most common problems and their solutions:

– If you get a download error: Try changing your browser.
– If the installation fails: Temporarily disable your antivirus program.
– If the certificate does not appear: Check your browser’s certificate settings.
– If you are having signing problems: Use the latest version of Adobe Reader.

The idCAT certificate is a tool that will make your digital life in Barcelona significantly easier. The application process may seem a bit laborious, but it’s definitely worth it when you consider the convenience it provides. With so many official transactions moving to online platforms, having this certificate has become almost a necessity. Finally, once you have your certificate, I recommend that you use it regularly and keep track of its validity. Thus, you can handle your official transactions in Barcelona much easier and faster.

What is idCAT Mobile?

idCAT Mobile is another non-certificate digital authentication system offered by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. Unlike the classic certificate, you can use it with just your cell phone, without the need for complicated installation procedures. The great thing about the system is that it is usually approved within two days and you can start using it. I think they have realized that the certification business is too complicated and they are now trying to replace the whole system with that.

For example, although some of the official transactions still require a certificate, you can complete transactions such as Empadronamiento thanks to idCAT Mobile.

Documents Required for idCAT Mobile

Documents you need to have before you apply:

– NIE or DNI (Foreigner Identification Number or Spanish Identity Card)
– CatSalut Health Card (TSI) or MUFACE number, if available
– An active cell phone
– Email address (to see notifications)

Can I get idCAT Mobile without an NIE or TIE?

Yes, don’t worry if you have not yet received an NIE or DNI. You can also apply through the video identity verification system. You can use your passport during this period.

How to get idCAT Mobile?

To apply for idCAT Mobile, go to idcatmobil.cat and click on“Request for my idCAT Mobile“. They will then direct you to a form and ask you to answer questions about the above documents. Two days after completing the process, your idCAT Mobile account is activated and you can start using it.

idCAT Mobile is a modern solution that will significantly simplify your digital life in Barcelona. It is much more user-friendly and faster than the classic certificate system. I can say that it is the most practical way to handle official transactions, especially for new movers. The continuous development of the system and the improvement of the user experience is an indication that it will be even more widely used in the future.
