Basilica de la Mercè

Barcelona’s historical treasure
Basilica de la Mercè

Basilica de la Mercè (Basilica of Mercy), one of the most elegant examples of Gothic architecture, was built between 1765 and 1775 and is one of the most important religious buildings in Barcelona, adding color to the historical fabric of the city. Located in the heart of the Ciutat Vella district, the basilica is a part of the city not only for its architecture but also for its deep spiritual meaning. Dedicated to the Virgen de la Mercè, the patron saint of Barcelona, this building has been the center of attraction for residents and visitors for many years.

Discover Basilica de la Mercè

Located in Plaça de la Mercè square, the baroque facade of the basilica fascinates thousands of visitors every day. The building, which bears the signature of Josep Mas i Dordal, the famous architect of Catalunya, successfully carries the architectural features of the 18th century to the present day. The statue of the Virgin Mary at the main altar of the basilica, an exact copy of the original 14th century statue, is at the center of spirituality.

Dating back to the 13th century, the basilica, built on the spiritual legacy of the Mercedarian Order, has an interesting founding story. The order was founded to rescue Christians captured by Muslims at the time. Over time, it has become an indispensable part of Barcelona’s religious and cultural fabric.

One of the most striking features of the basilica is its single nave main hall and side chapels. The interior decorations, which blend Gothic and baroque styles, reflect the artistic understanding of the period. The frescoes and stained glass windows in the dome create a mesmerizing atmosphere as natural light floods in.

La Mercè Festival

La Mercè festival dates back to 1687. That year, after the city recovered from a massive locust infestation, Our Lady of Mercy (Virgin de la Mercè) was declared the patron saint of Barcelona.

Celebrations in the form of festivals as we know them today began to take shape in the early 20th century, and over time the festival has been enriched with events that attract people of all ages and walks of life, and today it has become a festival that both city dwellers and tourists look forward to.

Practical Information for Visitors

The Basilica is located in the tourist center of Barcelona, in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. It is easy to get there by metro; you can use the L3 line to Drassanes or the L4 line to Jaume I.

Worship and Visiting Hours

The basilica serves as both an active place of worship and a tourist spot. It is open from 09:00 in the morning until 13:00 in the evening and from 16:30 until 20:00 in the afternoon. Visiting hours may vary on Sunday services and special religious days.

The best times to visit the basilica are early morning and afternoon. Especially in the summer months (July-August), I recommend the morning hours due to the high number of tourists. If you have time, you can take a coffee break in one of the cafés in La Mercè square.
